SUMMARY

    The book is composed of three parts. The first is theoretical (Chapters 1 and 2), the second is methodological (Chapters 3 and 4) and the third is empirical (Chapters 5 to 8).
The theoretical part introduces counsellogy as an interdisciplinary social science and counselling as the object of its research. It includes a history of how this discipline was created in Poland and other countries and examines how counselling is related to the following disciplines: philosophy, psychology, sociology, pedagogy, social policy and cultural studies. Counsellogy is comprised of knowledge generated by those conducting research into counselling and printed in academic publications. This is collected and stored by organisations, associations, conferences and journals. This knowledge is interdisciplinary in character. A method for its generation, storage, distribution and application is presented in the book. The following concepts and terms are defined: counselling service, counsellor, client, counselling and advice. Their designata and the overlapping relationships between them are described.
Counselling is a social life practice and is analysed from four perspectives: as (1) the social actions of a counsellor and (or on behalf of) a client; (2) an interpersonal relationship; (3) an activity organised by institutions and counselling service providers; (4) an organised macrosystem or network. Functionality, involvement, specialisation, ethicality and confidentiality are just some of the features of counselling that are discussed.
The methodological part also covers the history of counsellogy by analysing the development of research into counselling from accounts of real life situations (statistics, case studies, recommendations for action and postulations about future practice trends) to a critical analysis of the current reality. It familiarises the reader with the use of various methological assumptions in the analysis and description of counselling: (1) the assumptions of the neo-positivist paradigm; (2) those of the interpretative/humanistic research paradigm; (3) those of the critical paradigm and (4) those of the post-modernist paradigm, while giving due consideration to theories related to these paradigms which are useful when interpreting counselling.
The empirical part contains examples of original applications of counsellogy knowledge, constructed on the basis of the aforementioned paradigms and related theories. These are employed to examine various aspects of counselling as a social life process, as follows : the positivist paradigm ? the object of analysis: career counselling; the humanistic paradigm (the theory of suffering) ? personal and family counselling; the critical paradigm (intergenerational gap theory) ? family counselling; the post-modernist paradigm (mapping) ? models of modern counsellors? work.
